Of op zijn minst is men het erover eens dat het een goede kandidaat voor de titel is en het onderzoeken waard. Het verdwijnen van Atlantis zou samenvallen met de Minoïsche uitbarsting, ongeveer 3.600 jaar geleden en de ineenstorting van de caldera, die u nog staads vandaag kan zien.
