Een naamsteen markeert in Merkem de site Drie Grachten. Hier zijn geen blijvende restanten van WO I aanwezig, maar in 1914-1918 stond op deze plek een belangrijke voorpost. In november 1914 vochten Franse Zouaven en Duitse soldaten om deze plaats. De Duitse aanval mislukte dankzij de kreet van een gevangengenomen Zouaaf: “Tirez donc au nom de Dieu, ce sont les Boches!”. Aan de site Drie Grachten ligt nu De Boot, een ecologisch binnenschip, aangemeerd.
