In de bruisende stad van de Oudheid moest ook gezocht worden naar praktische oplossingen voor de hygiene. De publieke toiletten lagen aan de rand van de agora. Je kan nog steeds een dubbele marmeren toiletbril zien die toen gebruikt werd. Het was een gebouw met een open centraal gedeelte voor licht en verluchting. Een kanaaltje voerde continu vers water onder de toiletbrillen aan en zorgde aldus voor een permanent proper toilet.
