Het zinkgat Ayios Gergios - Metamorphosis is gelegen in de doline van Didyma. Een zinkgat, ook wel verdwijngat of sinkhole genoemd, ontstaat door het instorten van een holte in de ondergrond. De meest voorkomende zinkgaten zijn dolines; dit zijn laagtes die zijn ontstaan door karst, het oplossen van kalksteen in water. Het zinkgat van Ayios Gergios - Metamorphosis is zo een kleine doline, gelegen in de grotere de doline van Dydima. Dus wat hier op kleinere schaal gebeurt, gebeurt op grotere schaal in de grote doline van Didyma. Het water van de gesloten depressie sijpelt in de ondergrond en lost daar het kalkgesteente op. Dat fenomeen op grotere schaal kennen we als grotvorming. Maar soms gebeurt het op kleinere schaal en gebeurt de oplossing langs spleten. Indien er een grote grot instort, krijg je zo een typisch zinkgat, zoals he hier kan zien. Wat opvallend is, is hoe mooi cirkelvormig dit zinkgat is. Dit is een schoolvoorbeeld van een zinkgat.
