De Groaveberg is een verhoging van zo'n 6 meter in het landschap langs het Lange Pad (de oudste oost-west verbinding in het Leudal). Het is waarschijnlijk een motte, een door de mens opgeworpen heuvel. In het verleden heeft de Groaveberg tot vele verhalen geleid, zoals dat van een Roggelse gravin die werd aangezien voor een heks. Toen ze stierf bestond het idee om ze te begraven in het Leudal en het graf zo massief te bedekken met zand, dat haar geest er nooit meer uit zou kunnen komen. Zo onstond de Groavinneberg, later verbasterd tot Groaveberg.
