Després de l' enfonsament del primer pont nou l'any 1741 , va sorgir la necessitat de millorar aquest accés a la ciutat a causa del gran flux de persones i mercaderies que l'havien de tornar a utilitzar.
L' antiga porta àrab del pont va ser substituïda i ampliada per l'actual durant el regnat del primer Borbó del tron espanyol, Felip V, l'any 1742, segons la inscripció a la pedra al costat de la porta.
Aquest monument emblemàtic de la ciutat està format per un doble arc tallat, coronat per tres pinacles i decorat amb la petxina de la família Anjou i l' escut reial dels Borbons a l'exterior.
