L'ermita va ser construïda entre 1880 i 1881 per Felipe Sainz de Veranda, arquitecte municipal, al solar de l'antic Convent dels Sants Màrtirs quan es va ampliar el passeig de la Ribera des del Molino de Martos fins al Campo Madre de Dios.
A l'interior, es pot admirar un bell sarcòfag paleocristiano en marbre de Carrara , datat cap a l'any 330 dC (període constantià), que es troba a la mateixa capella. Dues escenes adornen la part frontal del sarcòfag: el cant del gall i la detenció del sant.
