La Caserne Leclaire va ser construïda entre 1732 i 1736 pel marquès d'Asfeld, a instigació de Vauban, per oferir una alternativa a l'allotjament de la població local, que s'havia tornat cada cop més impopular a mesura que creixia el nombre de tropes en residència permanent.
L' antiga caserna del mateix lloc s'havia quedat massa ruïnosa i massa petita. L'edifici de 4 plantes podia acollir 1.000 efectius i els seus oficials, mentre que el pavelló cantoner estava destinat a aquests darrers i estava delimitat a l'exterior per cadenes cantoneres de pedra.
Les barraques porten el nom del general Leclaire (1752-1811).
