The Caserne Leclaire was built between 1732 and 1736 by the Marquis d'Asfeld, at the instigation of Vauban, to provide an alternative to lodgings for the local population, which had become increasingly unpopular as the number of troops in permanent residence grew.
The old barracks on the same site had become too dilapidated and too small. The 4-storey building could house 1,000 troops and their officers, while the corner pavilion was intended for the latter and was bounded on the outside by stone corner chains.
The barracks bear the name of General Leclaire (1752-1811).
