La Caserne Leclaire fue construida entre 1732 y 1736 por el marqués de Asfeld, por iniciativa de Vauban, para ofrecer una alternativa al alojamiento a la población local, cada vez más impopular a medida que aumentaba el número de tropas en residencia permanente.
El antiguo cuartel que se encontraba en el mismo lugar estaba en muy mal estado y era demasiado pequeño. El edificio de cuatro plantas podía albergar a 1.000 soldados y sus oficiales, mientras que el pabellón de la esquina estaba destinado a estos últimos y estaba delimitado por fuera con cadenas de piedra en las esquinas.
El cuartel lleva el nombre del general Leclaire (1752-1811).
