La porta, construïda al segle XVI , és una de les tres portes restants i donava accés a la part alta de la ciutat.
Va delimitar el districte de la Cadda, un barri habitat en gran part per jueus .
Originàriament hi havia cinc portes , però la porta de San Calogero és l'única que queda, integrada a les antigues muralles de la ciutat que van ser construïdes pel virrei De Vega amb la idea de fortificar la ciutat dotant-la de baluards armats amb canons de llarg abast, alguns dels quals encara avui es poden veure, com el baluard de S. Àgata, el baluard de S. Salvatore i el bastió de la Vega.
