La porta, costruita nel XVI secolo , è una delle tre porte rimaste e consentiva l'accesso alla parte alta della città.
Ha delimitato il quartiere Cadda, un quartiere abitato in gran parte da ebrei .
In origine le porte erano cinque , ma quella di San Calogero è l'unica rimasta, integrata nelle antiche mura cittadine che furono fatte costruire dal viceré De Vega con l'idea di fortificare la città dotandola di bastioni armati con cannoni a lunga gittata, alcuni di cui sono ancora oggi visibili, come il bastione S. Agata, il bastione S. Salvatore ed il bastio Vega.
