El bust d'aquest il·lustre arqueòleg va ser col·locat aquí el 1933 i és obra de l' escultor António de Azevedo.
Francisco Martins Sarmento va néixer a Guimarães en 1833. Home de raonable fortuna, va dedicar el seu temps a investigar els orígens de la terra que li va donar el seu ésser i es va distingir com arqueòleg i etnòleg , dedicant-se a supervisar excavacions ia estudiar la Citânia de Briteiros i el Castro de Saborós.
Va morir a Guimarães en 1899, i va ser el dia immediatament després de la seva mort quan l'Ajuntament de Guimarães va decidir batejar aquesta plaça com Llarg de Martins Sarmento.
