La construcció de l'actual església parroquial el 1496 va substituir una església anterior , de la qual no queden vestigis.
L'Església Matriu de Vila do Conde és un dels monuments més emblemàtics de la ciutat i de la província i també és un dels més importants d'estil manuelino del país, amb elements de l'arquitectura gòtica i renaixentista.
Destaquen el pòrtic profusament decorat , l'autoria del qual s'atribueix a João de Castilho, i el campanar quadrangular , construït en 1573 per João Lopes, O Velho.
A l'interior destaquen els retaules, el púlpit i les voltes de les capelles ricament decorades i l'arc de pedra policromada.
Al seu interior també es pot visitar el Museu d'Art Sacre , prèvia cita als serveis parroquials de Vila do Conde.
