Som navnet antyder, var Koornmarkt tidligere kornmarkedet. Det var et af de vigtigste markeder i byen.
Korn ankom til havnen ved Graslei og blev bragt til markedet gennem de snævre gyder. Mange af husene her havde en kornloft. Usolgt korn måtte opbevares af bønderne i jorden eller i strik huse. I det 15. århundrede var der stadig omkring 30 af disse opbevaringshuse på Koornmarkt. I midten af det 18. århundrede var der kun fire tilbage: Cleppe, den Zak, den Leeuw og 't Scaec eller Damberd.
I Damberd kan du nu få en god pint i, hvad der nu er et af de mere kendte jazzcaféer i byen.
