Come suggerisce il nome, il Koornmarkt era in passato il mercato del grano. Questo era uno dei mercati più importanti della città.
Il grano arrivava al porto di Graslei ed era portato al mercato attraverso i vicoli stretti. Molte delle case qui erano dotate di un solaio per il grano. Il grano invenduto poteva essere conservato dai contadini nelle case di terra o nelle case a trave. Nel XV secolo c'erano ancora una trentina di questi magazzini al Koornmarkt. A metà del XVIII secolo ne erano rimasti solo quattro: la Cleppe, den Zak, den Leeuw e 't Scaec o Damberd.
Nel Damberd puoi ora gustare una buona pinta in quello che è ora uno dei jazz café più famosi della città.
