Over Wijgmaal kan der fortælles mere end blot historien om Remysite. Vidste du for eksempel, at Wijgmaal indtil fusionen i 1977 tilhørte Herent og ikke Leuven? Længere tilbage i tiden blev landsbyen hårdt ramt under både første og anden verdenskrig. Under begge krige faldt adskillige ofre, både soldater og civile. Derudover blev der, især under 2. verdenskrig, også ødelagt en hel række bygninger i landsbyen. Således blev broen over kanalen og Dijle ødelagt ved krigens begyndelse. Visse gadenavne, fx 5. liniestræde, minder stadig om denne krigshistorie.
