Over Wijgmaal valt meer te vertellen dan enkel de geschiedenis van de Remysite. Wist je bijvoorbeeld dat Wijgmaal tot de fusie in 1977 toebehoorde aan Herent en niet aan Leuven? Wat verder terug in de tijd werd het dorp zwaar getroffen tijdens zowel de eerste als de tweede wereldoorlog. Tijdens beide oorlogen vielen verscheidene slachtoffers, zowel militairen als burgerslachtoffers. Daarnaast werd, vooral tijdens WO II, ook een heel aantal gebouwen in het dorp vernield. Zo werden de brug over het kanaal en de Dijle vernietigd aan het begin van de oorlog. Bepaalde straatnamen, bv. de 5de liniestraat herinneren nog aan dit oorlogsverleden.
