There is more to tell about Wijgmaal than just the history of the Remysite. Did you know, for example, that Wijgmaal belonged to Herent and not to Leuven until the merger in 1977? Further back in time, the village was heavily affected during both World War I and World War II. During both wars, several casualties occurred, both military and civilian. In addition, many buildings in the village were destroyed, especially during WWII. For instance, the bridge over the canal and the Dijle were destroyed at the beginning of the war. Certain street names, such as the 5th Line Street, still remind us of this wartime past.
Anyone who wants to know more about the interesting history of Remy and Wijgmaal can find this in the publication 'Street Histories - De Wijgmalenhoek' by the Working Group From Wicmale to Wijgmaal.
