Sobre Wijgmaal se puede contar más que solo la historia de la Remysite. ¿Sabías, por ejemplo, que Wijgmaal pertenecía a Herent y no a Lovaina hasta la fusión en 1977? Más atrás en el tiempo, el pueblo fue gravemente afectado durante la Primera y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Durante ambas guerras hubo varios muertos, tanto militares como civiles. Además, se destruyeron muchos edificios en el pueblo, especialmente durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Así, el puente sobre el canal y el Dijle fueron destruidos al comienzo de la guerra. Algunos nombres de calles, como la calle 5 de Liniestraat, aún recuerdan este pasado bélico.
