Heathlandet i Drongengoed tilhører en sjælden type: den 'intermediære atlantiske hede'. Et langt navn, men denne type rummer net lidt flere forskellige arter end den meget omtalte 'purpurhede' fra Kempen. Med hjælp fra europæiske tilskud blev der i 2009 langs Drongengoedvej lavet strækninger, der blev 'pløjet', hvilket er fjernelse af det øverste jordlag. På den måde fik frøene fra de gamle vegetationsformer igen mulighed for at udvikle sig. En logisk indgriben for et område, der i 1000 år har svinget mellem skov og hede.
