I skovene til venstre ser du et åbent sandet område. Hechtel var under 1. verdenskrig næsten ubebygget og omgivet af et åbent klitlandskab. De første storskala skovplantninger i denne region stammer for øvrigt fra lige før 1. verdenskrig. Domæneskoven Pijnven (beliggende nord for her) blev plantet i 1904.
