I 1214 blev der første gang rapporteret om et Slot på dette sted. I det pågældende dokument var der tale om en kamp mellem Frederik II og Otto IV, hvor Frederik indtog dette slot. Henrik I af Brabant, der kæmpede på Ottos side, overgav sig her til Frederik.
I 1346 blev slottet ødelagt af militserne fra Tongeren, Dinant og Hoei i deres kamp mod prins-biskop Engelbert III af der Mark fra Liège. I 1364 valgte herren af Hamal side med Arnold af Rummen i hans kamp mod prins-biskop Jan af Arkel. Slotet blev igen ødelagt, denne gang af liègeiske tropper. Også i 1676 blev slottet delvist ødelagt, denne gang af tropper fra republikken. Efter Slaget ved Lafelt opholdt kong Ludvig XV af Frankrig sig i seks uger på slottet.
