En 1214, un château est mentionné pour la première fois sur ce site. Le document en question mentionne une bataille entre Frédéric II et Otton IV, au cours de laquelle Frédéric s’empara de ce château. Henri Ier de Brabant, qui combattait aux côtés d’Othon, se rendit à Frédéric.
En 1346, le château est détruit par les milices de Tongres, Dinant et Huy dans leur lutte contre le prince-évêque Engelbert III de la Marque de Liège. En 1364, le seigneur de Hamal se rangea du côté d’Arnold van Rummen dans sa lutte contre le prince-évêque Jan van Arkel. Une fois de plus, le château est détruit, cette fois par les troupes liégeoises. Toujours en 1676, le château fut partiellement détruit, cette fois par les troupes de la République. Après la bataille de Lafelt, le roi Louis XV de France séjourna au château pendant six semaines.
