Im Jahr 1214 wurde erstmals von einer Burg an dieser Stelle berichtet. In dem entsprechenden Dokument war von einem Streit zwischen Friedrich II. und Otto IV. die Rede, wobei Friedrich diese Burg einnahm. Heinrich I. von Brabant, der auf Seiten Ottos kämpfte, ergab sich hier Friedrich.
Im Jahr 1346 wurde die Burg von den Militärs von Tongeren, Dinant und Hoei in ihrem Kampf gegen den Fürstbischof Engelbert III. von der Mark aus Lüttich zerstört. 1364 wählte der Herr von Hamal die Seite von Arnold von Rummen in dessen Kampf gegen den Fürstbischof Johannes von Arkel. Wieder wurde die Burg zerstört, diesmal durch Truppen aus Lüttich. Auch im Jahr 1676 wurde die Burg teilweise zerstört, diesmal durch Truppen der Republik. Nach der Schlacht bei Lafelt verweilte König Ludwig XV. von Frankreich sechs Wochen lang auf der Burg.
