Allerede i det tidlige 10. århundrede var området omkring og under Prag Slot udviklet til et vigtigt handelscenter, hvor handlende fra hele Europa samledes. I 965 skrev en arabisk købmand og rejsende, kaldet Ibrahim ibn Ya'qub: "Prag er bygget af sten og kalk, og det har det største handelscenter. Slaverne er generelt modige og tapre... De besætter de lande, som er de mest frugtbare og rige på en god fødevareforsyning."
