Au début du 10ème siècle, la région autour et en dessous du château de Prague s'était développée en un important centre commercial, où des marchands de toute l'Europe se rassemblaient. En 965, un marchand et voyageur arabe, nommé Ibrahim ibn Ya'qub écrivit : "Prague est construite en pierre et en chaux, et elle possède le plus grand centre commercial. Les Slaves sont dans l'ensemble courageux et braves... Ils occupent des terres qui sont les plus fertiles et abondantes en fournitures alimentaires."
