Bis zum frühen 10. Jahrhundert hatte sich das Gebiet um und unter der Prager Burg zu einem wichtigen Handelszentrum entwickelt, in dem Händler aus ganz Europa zusammenkamen. Im Jahr 965 schrieb ein arabischer Händler und Reisender namens Ibrahim ibn Ya'qub: "Prag ist aus Stein und Kalk gebaut, und es hat das größte Handelszentrum. Die Slawen sind insgesamt mutig und tapfer... Sie besetzen die Länder, die am fruchtbarsten sind und eine gute Nahrungsversorgung haben."
