Vulkaaneifel er en del af Eifel. Eifel er en del af det rhinske skiferplateau, et mellem bjerg, der også omfatter Ardennerne, Sauerland, Hunsrück og Taunus.
Vulkanområdet skylder sit navn til den vulkaniske aktivitet, der har formet landskabet. Disse aktiviteter kan stadig genkendes i form af kratre, naturgasser, lavaformationer og marer.
