La Vulkaaneifel es una parte de la Eifel. La Eifel forma parte de la meseta de pizarra renana, una montaña media que también incluye las Ardenas, el Sauerland, el Hunsrück y el Taunus.
El campo volcánico debe su nombre a la actividad volcánica que ha moldeado el paisaje. Estas actividades todavía se pueden reconocer en la forma de cráteres, gases naturales, formaciones de lava y maren.
