Den Frie by Frankfurt var fra 1815 til 1866 en af fire bystater i Det Tyske Forbund. Den var sæde for Forbundsdagen og et finanscenter af europæisk rang. I Frankfurter Wachensturm forsøgte oprørere i 1833 at sætte en tysk revolution i gang. I 1848/49 blev den Frankfurter Nationalforsamling afholdt i Paulskirken.
I den Tyske Krig blev den den 16. juli 1866 besat af preussiske tropper. Den 3. oktober 1866 annekterede Preussen den Frie by Frankfurt og indlemmede den i den nyoprettede provins Hessen-Nassau.
