Berkelruten løber gennem naturområder og fører gang på gang tilbage i tiden. Berkel udspringer i Billerbeck, ved foden af Baumberge. Den flyder gennem Coesfeld, Gescher, Stadtlohn og Vreden, før den når Holland. Gennem Eibergen, Borculo, Lochem og Almen munder den ved Zutphen ud i IJssel.
Et stop værd er naturskånselsområdet Zwillbrocker Venn med sin flamingokoloni. Har du lyst til kulturhistorie? Så tag til klokkebyen Gescher, keramikbyen Stadtlohn eller til Hamaland-museet i Vreden. En kommune har endda fået sit navn fra Berkel: Berkelland. Her indbyder landsbykirker, vandmøller og andre historiske bygninger til besøg. Og museumslandskabet byder også på ægte sjældenheder, som for eksempel brand- eller krystalmuseet i Borculo.
