Det spektakulære landskab i Las Médulas stammer fra en romersk minedriftsteknik beskrevet af Plinius den Ældre i 77 e.Kr., der bestod i at underminerer bjerget med store mængder vand leveret af mindst syv lange akvædukter, der tappede floderne i de nærliggende bjerge. De samme akvædukter blev brugt til at vaske de omfattende guldaflejringer.
Las Médulas er et UNESCO verdensarvssted.
