Le paysage spectaculaire de Las Médulas résulte d'une technique minière romaine décrite par Pline l'Ancien en 77 après J.-C. qui consistait à saper la montagne avec de grandes quantités d'eau fournies par au moins sept longs aqueducs alimentant les rivières des montagnes environnantes. Les mêmes aqueducs étaient utilisés pour laver les vastes dépôts d'or.
Las Médulas est un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
