Die spektakuläre Landschaft von Las Médulas entstand durch eine römische Bergbautechnik, die von Plinius dem Älteren im Jahr 77 n. Chr. beschrieben wurde. Sie bestand darin, den Berg mit großen Mengen Wasser zu unterspülen, das durch mindestens sieben lange Aquädukte aus den nahegelegenen Bergen zugeführt wurde. Die gleichen Aquädukte wurden genutzt, um die umfangreichen Goldvorkommen auszuwaschen.
Las Médulas ist ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
