Il paesaggio spettacolare delle Las Médulas è il risultato di una tecnica mineraria romana descritta da Plinio il Vecchio nel 77 d.C., che consisteva nel minare la montagna con grandi quantità d'acqua fornite da almeno sette lunghi acquedotti che attingevano ai fiumi delle montagne vicine. Gli stessi acquedotti erano utilizzati per lavare gli estesi depositi d'oro.
Las Médulas è un sito patrimonio dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.
