Het spectaculaire landschap van Las Médulas is het resultaat van een Romeinse mijnbouwtechniek die door Plinius de Oudere in 77 na Christus werd beschreven en bestond uit het ondermijnen van de berg met grote hoeveelheden water, geleverd door minstens zeven lange aqueducten die de rivieren in de nabijgelegen bergen aanboorden. Dezelfde aqueducten werden gebruikt om de uitgebreide goudafzettingen te wassen.
Las Médulas is een UNESCO-werelderfgoed.
