Den 19. september 1783 lancerede Montgolfier for Ludvig XVI sin varmluftballon i Versailles. De første "rejsende" var et får, en and og en han. Tre km længere væk landede ballonen. Dyrene var alle sunde, bortset fra hanen, der havde fået et spark af fåret. En måned senere, den 15. oktober 1783, skulle den første menneske stige op i en ballon.
