Tårnet blev bygget i det 15. århundrede som en del af Saint-Tropez' forsvarssystem. Byen havde fire tårne: Portalet-tårnet, Vieille-tårnet, Jarlier-tårnet og Suffren-tårnet.
Tårnet fungerede som observations- og artilleripost for at beskytte mod flådeangreb og pirateri. Dets usædvanlige femkantede base var designet til bedre at afbøje kanonkugler og tillade affyring i flere retninger.
Navnet kommer fra " portalet ", der betyder "lille port". Lige ved siden af tårnet var engang en lille byindgang (port), der førte til det gamle fiskerdistrikt La Ponche .
