Der Turm wurde im 15. Jahrhundert als Teil des Verteidigungssystems von Saint-Tropez erbaut. Die Stadt hatte vier Türme: den Portalet-Turm, den Vieille-Turm, den Jarlier-Turm und den Suffren-Turm.
Der Turm diente als Beobachtungs- und Artillerieposten zum Schutz vor Seeangriffen und Piraterie. Seine ungewöhnliche fünfeckige Basis wurde entwickelt, um Kanonenkugeln besser abzulenken und das Feuern in mehrere Richtungen zu ermöglichen.
Der Name kommt von „ portalet “, was „kleines Tor“ bedeutet. Direkt neben dem Turm befand sich früher ein kleiner Stadteingang (Tor), der zum alten Fischerviertel La Ponche führte.
