La torre es va construir al segle XV com a part del sistema defensiu de Saint-Tropez. La ciutat comptava amb quatre torres: la Torre Portalet, la Torre Vieille, la Torre Jarlier i la Torre Suffren.
La torre servia de lloc de vigilància i artilleria per protegir-se dels atacs navals i la pirateria. La seva inusual base pentagonal va ser dissenyada per desviar millor les bales de canó i permetre trets en múltiples direccions.
El nom prové de " portalet ", que significa "portet". Antigament, just al costat de la torre, hi havia una petita entrada a la ciutat (portó), que conduïa a l'antic barri pesquer de la Ponche .
Des de la torre es té una vista de l'amagada Plage de la Glaye i de la Plage de la Ponche , dues platges idíl·liques entre les roques, estimades pels vilatans.
