La torre se construyó en el siglo XV como parte del sistema defensivo de Saint-Tropez. La ciudad contaba con cuatro torres: la Torre Portalet, la Torre Vieille, la Torre Jarlier y la Torre Suffren.
La torre servía de puesto de vigilancia y artillería para protegerse de los ataques navales y la piratería. Su inusual base pentagonal fue diseñada para desviar mejor las balas de cañón y permitir disparos en múltiples direcciones.
El nombre proviene de " portalet ", que significa "portito". Antiguamente, justo al lado de la torre, había una pequeña entrada a la ciudad (portón), que conducía al antiguo barrio pesquero de La Ponche .
Desde la torre se tiene una vista de la escondida Plage de la Glaye y de la Plage de la Ponche , dos playas idílicas entre las rocas, amadas por los lugareños.
