The tower was built in the 15th century as part of Saint-Tropez's defense system. The town had four towers: the Portalet Tower, the Vieille Tower, the Jarlier Tower, and the Suffren Tower.
The tower served as a lookout and artillery post to ward off naval attacks and piracy. Its unusual pentagonal base shape was designed to better deflect cannonballs and allow shots to be fired in multiple directions.
The name comes from " portalet ," which means "little gate." There used to be a small city entrance (gate) right next to the tower, leading to the old fishing district of La Ponche .
From the tower you have a view of the hidden Plage de la Glaye and Plage de la Ponche – two idyllic beaches between the rocks, loved by locals.
