Den berømte Alexander von Humboldt var som en af tidens topforskere en velkommen gæst i Royal Society. På det tidspunkt lå Royal Society ikke her, men i Somerset House. Senere ville det flytte til. I den smukke bog "Naturen's opfinder" beskriver forfatteren Andrea Wulf, at Alexander von Humboldt ikke var tilfreds med maden i den eksklusive Royal Society Dining Club. Alexander var vant til den dejlige franske cuisine fra Paris. Han skulle have sagt: "Jeg har spist middag i Royal Society, hvor man bliver forgiftet."
