Den store videnskabsmand Thomas Young blev født her i Milverton den 13. juni 1773 i en kvækerfamilie. Andrew Robinson skrev en biografi om denne videnskabsmand: "Den sidste mand, der vidste alt". Han var bekendt med stort set hele den videnskabelige viden fra begyndelsen af det 19. århundrede. Han blev kendt som "Young-fænomenet." Han forklarede de optiske fænomener ved diffraktion og interferens af lys. Som egyptolog kom han med den første videnskabelige dekryptering af hieroglyferne. I 1814 havde Young fuldstændig oversat den "enchoriale" tekst på Rosetta-stenen (ved at bruge en liste med 86 demotiske ord.
