Den berømte Alexander von Humboldt var som topforsker fra sin tid en velkommen gæst i Royal Society. På det tidspunkt lå Royal Society ikke her, men i Somerset House. I den smukke bog "Naturen's opfinder" beskriver forfatteren Andrea Wulf, at Alexander von Humboldt ikke var tilfreds med maden fra den eksklusive Royal Society Dining Club. Alexander var jo vant til det lækre franske køkken fra Paris. Han skulle have sagt: "Jeg har spist middag i Royal Society, hvor man bliver forgiftet".
