Mick O'Dwyer spillede Gaelic fodbold med sin lokale klub Waterville og var medlem af Kerry seniorhold fra 1956 til 1974. O'Dwyer fungerede senere som træner for Kildare, Laois, Wicklow og Clare, men det var som træner for Kerry senior fodboldhold fra 1975 til 1989, at han opnåede den ikoniske status som den mest succesfulde træner nogensinde.
