Mick O'Dwyer spielte Gaelic Football mit seinem lokalen Club Waterville und war von 1956 bis 1974 Mitglied der Kerry Seniorenmannschaft. O'Dwyer diente später als Manager von Kildare, Laois und Wicklow sowie Clare, aber es war als Trainer der Kerry Seniorenfußballmannschaft von 1975 bis 1989, dass er den ikonischen Status des erfolgreichsten Trainers aller Zeiten erhielt.
