Torre Grossa blev bygget i 1310. Tårnene i San Gimignano tjente engang til forsvar mod angreb udefra. De velhavende familier kunne på denne måde demonstrere deres magt og privilegerede position.
Det højeste tårn i San Gimignano, Torre Grossa på Piazza del Duomo, er åbent for besøgende.
Tårnet er 54 meter højt og har 218 trin opad. Trinene er lette at nå for små børn. Det sidste stykke op skal klares over en stejl stige. Du befinder dig derefter på et smukt udsigtspunkt. Udsigten er fantastisk.
