Da det blev taget i brug i 1665, var rådhuset, hvad der nu er paladset, det største af sin slags i Europa. Dette skulle tydeligt symbolisere byens rigdom.
For at forhindre, at bygningen ville synke i den sumpede Amsterdamske jord, blev der slået 13.659 træpæle i jorden, så bygningen ville blive båret af det underliggende stabile sandlag. Dette kan stadig ses på tegningen af Jan Luyken fra 1709.
Rådhuset blev først et palads i 1805.
